❃ Drifting through warm tropical and subtropical seas, the manta ray is one of the ocean’s most graceful giants. Its enormous triangular pectoral fins stretch outward like wings from a broad, flattened body, while paired cephalic fins curl beside its wide mouth to help direct plankton-rich water inward. Like sharks, manta rays are cartilaginous fishes, their skeletons formed from flexible cartilage rather than bone.

❃ Manta rays are gentle filter feeders, sweeping through the water with their mouths held wide open as they collect plankton and other tiny organisms. Their powerful wing-like fins propel them in slow, effortless strokes, allowing them to glide through the sea with remarkable control. Some individuals perform graceful barrel rolls and underwater somersaults while feeding, repeatedly looping through dense concentrations of plankton as ocean currents carry their microscopic prey.

❃ Found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, manta rays often gather where currents bring nutrient-rich water and abundant food to the surface. They may also visit cleaning stations, where small cleaner fish remove parasites and dead tissue from their bodies. With wingspans reaching several metres in the largest individuals, the manta ray is a magnificent traveller of the open ocean — a creature that seems to fly through the water, carried by currents beneath the endless blue.
