❃ Roaming the swampy lowlands of northern Africa some thirty million years ago, Arsinoitherium was one of the most extraordinary mammals of the late Eocene. Roughly the size of a modern white rhino, it carried two enormous bony horns side by side on its snout — fused directly to the skull and edged with a smaller second pair just behind. Despite the rhino-like resemblance, it was not a rhinoceros at all. Its closest living relatives are elephants, hyraxes, and manatees.
❃ Fossils first surfaced in the Fayum depression of Egypt in the early 1900s, in a region once dominated by warm tropical wetlands long since swallowed by desert. The genus takes its name from Queen Arsinoë II of ancient Egypt, whose palace once stood near the dig site. Arsinoitherium browsed on soft vegetation along the swamp margins, its barrel-shaped body and short pillar-like legs suggesting a slow, semi-aquatic life closer to a hippopotamus than a rhino.
❃ Its huge horns were hollow rather than solid bone — light enough to carry, but likely too fragile for serious combat. Most palaeontologists now suspect they served as display structures, used to intimidate rivals or attract mates rather than fight outright. Arsinoitherium vanished some twenty-seven million years ago as Africa's climate cooled and dried, taking with it one of the strangest experiments in mammalian headgear the world has ever seen.

Arsinoitherium :- I"ts diet consisted of leaves, fruits, nuts and seeds ... Its large size meant it was an apex predator in its environment.(Gage Beasley 2025) This seems contradictory. Apex predators are carnivores by definition and so therefore would not be surviving on the diet described by the author. They are all an incredible looking series of animals covering a wide range of taxa form an incredibly wide range of time periods from Ediacaran, Cambrian, and Mesozoic periods to current day. I wish money was no issue as I would buy many many of them. Sadly the range has no dragonflies or weevils and no carnivorous marsupials like quolls or Thylacoleo - carnivorous drop bear like koala relatives.
