THE SCARLET-FOOTED SEAFARER

❃ Gliding above the warm tropical oceans, the red-footed booby is a graceful seabird instantly recognised by its vivid coral-red feet and long, pointed wings. Its plumage varies remarkably between individuals, ranging from snowy white bodies with dark wing feathers to rich chocolate-brown coats, sometimes accented by a pale head or tail. The smallest of the booby species, Sula sula combines a streamlined body with a long, pointed bill, making it perfectly suited to life above the open sea.

❃ Beneath its elegant silhouette lies a highly specialised hunter. The red-footed booby scans the water from above before plunging down to seize fish and squid beneath the surface. It is also agile enough to snatch flying fish straight from the air as they leap away from underwater predators. Unlike many seabirds that nest on bare ground, this species often builds its twig nest among the branches of coastal trees and shrubs, gripping the limbs with its strong feet. During courtship, males display their striking red feet in a distinctive ritual known as sky-pointing, raising their bills toward the sky to attract a mate.

❃ Found across tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, the red-footed booby spends much of its life far from land, returning to remote islands to breed in lively colonies. These ocean wanderers may travel considerable distances in search of food, sometimes gathering around schools of fish driven toward the surface by larger predators. Although widespread, they depend on healthy marine food webs and suitable nesting habitat among island vegetation. With brilliant feet, remarkable aerial agility, and a life shaped by the endless blue, the red-footed booby is a striking reminder of the extraordinary wildlife thriving beyond the shore.

When It Arrives

Your plush travels inside our satchel, and some designs may be vacuum-sealed to keep them protected and compact during their journey. Don’t worry if yours looks a little flattened when first unpacked — the filling is designed to bounce back and simply needs a little time and fluffing to take its full shape.

Bringing it back to form:

1. Remove it from the packaging as soon as it arrives — don’t leave it packed.

2. Give it a good fluff — gently knead the body and work the limbs, wings, ears, or tail to redistribute the filling.

3. Let it breathe. Most plush regain their full shape within 1–3 days, while larger or denser designs can take up to a week.

4. Smooth any flattened or creased fur with your fingers or a soft brush as it fluffs back up.

5. Want to speed things up? Use a hairdryer on low, warm heat, held about 20cm away. Keep it moving and use short bursts between fluffs. Never use high heat.

Plush make this journey every day and naturally bounce back after being unpacked. If yours still isn’t looking like itself after a week, write to us at support@gagebeasleyshop.com and we’ll make it right.

Care: Spot clean only. Do not soak.
