❃ Asaphus kowalewskii is a famous extinct marine arthropod that thrived on the muddy sea floors of ancient shallow oceans during the Middle Ordovician period, approximately 460 million years ago. Discovered in abundance within the fossil-rich limestone formations along the Volkhov River near Saint Petersburg, Russia, this iconic fossil invertebrate reached around two to three inches in length, featuring a flattened, oval-shaped calcified exoskeleton divided longitudinally into three distinct lobes.
